Behind the Brand
‘New Nostalgia’
Hazey is where nostalgia meets fresh ideas. A bold, loud, unapologetic take on streetwear that’s built to stand out. We blend retro feeling hand-drawn graphics with quality fabrics and modern silhouettes, creating pieces that feel both familiar and entirely new. Drawing inspiration from 2000’s pop culture, music, skate scene, street art and Saturday morning cartoons. Made for those who go against the grain.
Behind the Name:
The name Hazey is an homage to my late cousin and lifelong best mate, Jase. He was the kind of dude who could pick up any instrument, learn any sport, or pull off any party trick. If you told him he couldn’t do something, he’d prove you wrong, then backflip, skate off, and throw up two middle fingers.
When we were 15, Jase came to live with me. Rap music was his outlet. He’d spend all day writing bars at school and all night spitting them while I filmed on a smashed iPhone 6. One night, before recording what was his holy grail diss track on a few old friends, I told him he needed a rap name. After a hundred failed tries on myrapname.com including, Lil Jasey G, J $tar, Homie J Steeze… One stuck: Hazey J.
From then on, Hazey J posted rap videos weekly for the whole school to see. Spitting over old XXXTentacion, Drake, and Joey Bada$$ instrumentals. He was in year 10, kicking it with the year 12s, doing his thing, running a muck in the most loveable way. He was accepted into music excellence programs and was finally finding his rhythm on the Gold Coast.
Just as Jase was getting his groove, he lost his life in a tragic accident. He was so young, oozing talent with boundless potential. Losing him rocked my world.
I’ve gone through my stages of grief over the past seven years, from the beginning I knew I wanted to do something to keep his name alive. Something that captured his childlike spirit, rebellious attitude, colourful personality, loud energy rooted in that early 2000’s nostalgia to pay homage to the things we grew up on. Just like that. I had my dream, I had my name, I had my mission.
Hazey was born.
